Recent research indicates that a large number of headteachers are expected to retire within the next five years. There is currently a shortage of candidates for headship in some areas of the country and in certain types of schools, especially in small schools. ATL believes that the role would be more attractive if headteachers were able to focus on its core business: that of teaching and learning.
