Digest of Statistics 2007

Title: Digest of Statistics 2007
Authors: GTCNI
Abstract: This is the second Annual Digest of statistics produced by the Council; it presents information extracted from the Register of Teachers, which is an important and unique data source. This year’s Digest contains, for the first time, statistics relating to Principals and Vice-Principals. The information that the Council is able to hold on its ‘Register’ is determined by Schedule One of the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Registration of Teachers) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004. The fields that have been selected for the ‘Digest’ are those fields which are considered to have a high level of accuracy and completeness.

Title: GTCNI Survey of Teachers 2006
Authors: PricewaterhouseCoopers
Abstract: The primary aim of this research was to collect information on a range of professional matters and provide a sufficient body of evidence to inform the Council’s policy development on matters associated with teacher professionalism.
The methodology for this research included a desk-based review of relevant research and policy documents prior to designing the survey. Subsequently, a number of iterations of the survey were undertaken and comment and feedback was obtained from GTCNI.
The study team included a school practitioner reference panel, and piloting of the questionnaire involved obtaining detailed comments from them on the questionnaire.GTCNI provided a random sample of 3,000 teachers which was broadly representative of gender (male, female), type of school (primary, secondary, etc.) and geography (Education and Library
Boards).

Authors: Egan, David; Simmonds, Christine
Abstract: The research undertaken has been predominantly desk-top, involving literature searches and the use of
the internet. A small number of interviews with officers of professional associations and with teachers from other countries has also been carried out. The researchers believe there is scope for extended research, so as to further elucidate some areas of comparison and to explore the experience of individual teachers and other professionals.

Authors: White, Patrick; See, Beng Huat; Gorard, Stephen; Roberts, Karen
Abstract: The brief for this project was to complete "a detailed desk based study of existing secondary sources on teacher recruitment and retention" (GTCW, 2002, p. 8) comprising two related research activities: a search of existing literature in the area and the collection and analysis of relevant secondary data.
