Abstract: In April 2004, the Inspectorate undertook a survey to evaluate the Early Years Enriched Curriculum (EYEC) Project, hereafter known as the pilot. The pilot was originally offered in six schools within the Greater Shankill area of Belfast, and was based both on the findings of international research on how children learn and what was considered to be good early years practice both in Northern Ireland and across Europe. The emphasis was to be on learning rather than teaching and in the pilot the teachers were encouraged to be flexible in their approach and to adopt strategies to meet as fully as possible the needs of individuals and groups.
