Description: This paper follows the progress of a gifted and talented student in transition from primary to secondary school. Freddie’s experiences illustrate the tensions between the priorities of teaching and testing of core subjects for SATs exams and opportunities for more open-ended, creative and challenging topics in Year 6. In the absence of stimulating work Freddie’s motivation wanes. While Year 6 is a period of consolidation and stringent testing does this negate higher level learning? The author debates whether the current testing allow gifted and talented students demonstrate their capabilities? Freddie regains enthusiasm for his education in secondary school as the curriculum broadens and becomes more challenging.
